Alexander van Wickeren

Alexander van Wickeren coordinates the Global Tobacco History Network for ‘Commodities of Empire’. He regularly teaches at the Campus européen franco-allemand Nancy of Sciences Po and does science coordination at the University of Cologne. His dissertation Wissensräume im Wandel. Eine Geschichte der deutsch-französischen Tabakforschung, 1780-1870 analyses the boom of European tobacco cultivation during the period by integrating approaches from the history of knowledge and spatial history. He is currently working with Jean Stubbs and William Clarence-Smith on a book project that investigates the history of tobacco in the period 1780 to 1960 from a global and imperial history perspective.
